With the Super Bowl right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about what you’ll be serving for the big game. My husband loves football. All teams of football. All types of football. Football, football, football. Me? I love to entertain. It’s a marriage made in Super Bowl heaven when the two of us combine forces.
My favorite part of the Super Bowl, besides the commercials, is hands down the FOOD. From savory snacks to delicious desserts, you will find a little bit of everything at our home and the Super Bowl is the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family around the table to cheer on your chosen team. Or someone else’s team, in our case this year.
As much as I love baking and creating treats that look like footballs, when it comes to feeding the men in your life you’re going to want something a little more substantial. This Super Bowl Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork Recipe is a game day crowd pleaser. Paired with the delicious and hearty Cobblestone Bread Co. Kaiser rolls, don’t be surprised if you catch the guys piling their sandwiches mile high.
I like to keep things a little girly and when I spotted the “real women watch football” napkins, I tossed them into my buggy as a reminder that football can be enjoyable for women.
The beauty of the recipe is that it’s all done in the slow cooker. You can just fix it and forget it while you prepare the rest of your menu and comes in super handy when you’re pressed for time.
- Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork Recipe:
- 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup chicken stock
- 2 tbsp dark brown sugar
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp salt, or to taste
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 (4-1/2- to 5-pound) boneless or bone-in pork shoulder (also known as pork butt), twine or netting removed
- 2 cups barbecue sauce (I use Sweet Baby Ray’s Hickory & Brown Sugar)
- Place the onion and garlic in the bottom of the slow cooker with the chicken stock poured on top.
- In a small bowl, combine the dry ingredients: sugar, chili powder, salt, cumin and cinnamon. Pat the pork dry with paper towels and rub the spice mixture over the pork, patting to keep it in place. Add the meat to the slow cooker on top of the onions.
- Cover and cook 6-8 hours on high, or 8-10 hours on low.
- Once the pork has finished cooking, remove to a cutting board to shred. If the pork has a bone, remove and discard it.
- Remove the liquid from the slow cooker, reserving 1/2 cup.
- Add the shredded meat back to the slow cooker with the 1/2 cup of liquid. You can either add your bbq sauce now, or allow guests to control the barbecue sauce proportions and choose their own flavors by providing a variety of sauces.
My husband picks on me because we live in a state known for their New Orleans style po boys but the traditional french bread they use is not my favorite. It’s crispy throughout and I prefer a softer bread. If we’re at an unfamiliar restaurant, I will literally ask the server what type of bread the sandwich comes on. If it’s a soft bread, I order it, if it’s the hard stuff I ditch the sandwich.
The Cobblestone Bread Co. Corn Dusted Kaiser Roll is my favorite for sandwiches because it is the perfect combination of firm on the outside and soft on the inside. Corn dusted, it’s fluffy and substantial, too. Just look at the size of that thing!
