Apple Cinnamon Swirl Bread

Today we are celebrating the highly welcomed drop in temperature with some Apple Cinnamon Swirl Bread.

Moist and delicious, your kitchen will fill with delightful cinnamon goodness and I’m betting you’ll be licking your lips as you wait.

Pull up a chair and grab a fork because….I repeat, the cooler temperatures have FINALLY reached us here in south Louisiana!

We’ve had our first day below 90 degrees yesterday and we are celebrating and pulling out the scarves and knee boots. I even power washed my back patio in anticipation of our mulch delivery this weekend, ensuring everything is nice and clean for our fall spruce up.

The Fall season is my FAVORITE.

Give me fallen leaves. Give me soup. Give me pumpkins and cozy evenings on the porch. Give me all the baked bread!

Currently my porch is fall like but on the 15th of October it will transition to add Halloween. Then comes the month of November which tops the charts on my favorite list. The sweet season of Thanksgiving is my ultimate favorite. Obviously, Christmas-time is a top contender, but the holiday season gets so busy and hurried that November slightly edges it out.

I talk about it in my November inRegister article, but one of my favorite activities in November is participating in the National Tie One on Day.

Apple Cinnamon Swirl Bread

Yield: 1 loaf
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Total Time: 55 minutes

Ingredients

  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 large apple, peeled and finely chopped

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan and set aside. Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl and set aside. In a stand mixer, combine the white sugar and butter until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla and continue to beat on medium speed until combined. Add flour and baking powder, then finally, add the milk.
Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan and cover with the chopped apples. Pat the apples into the batter with the back of a spoon. Sprinkle with half of the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Pour the remaining batter over apple layer; top with remaining apples and add more brown sugar/cinnamon mixture.
Bake for 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the middle of the loaf comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

Founded by a woman named EllynAnne Geisel, Tie One on Day occurs on Thanksgiving Eve each year. The premise is to “give from the heart today for what we give thanks for tomorrow”. You buy (or create handmade) an apron, bake something, tuck a note of encouragement or prayer inside the pocket of the apron then set out to find someone worthy of such a kind gesture. A neighbor. A co-worker. A person in the community. The options are endless.

My go-to Tie One on Day treat of choice has been homemade bread recipes. You really can’t go wrong with anything baked in a loaf pan. It travels easy, wraps up nicely in the apron (or seasonal dish towel if aprons aren’t your thing) while providing something that can be enjoyed practically any time of the day.

In anticipation, I tested out a couple of new recipes and this Apple Cinnamon Swirl Bread is most definitely heading to a home near you….or, near me rather. But it can head to one near you if you make it yourself!

Have a great weekend! I hope the weather is finally nice near you, too.
